Students Comments

I was really struggling at school my GCSE’s were approaching fast and I was a mess with my maths English and Science, My maths was perhaps the greatest concern for me. After talking to my parents it was decided that I should get a maths tutor from Tutor Doctor. Tutor Doctor put together a brilliant maths tutoring package and made some solid recommendations too. This would involve steady maths tutoring for a few weeks and once I was improving and the tutor was satisfied then they would supply an English tutor and then a Science tutor too.

It was a complete success. My tutoring was progressive and not overwhelming. Each tutoring session added to my confidence and each tutor provided me with the help I needed. I had never had a tutor before but I cannot sing about how good tutors are if you are struggling. For me I feel my GCSE’s will be a lot easier to handle. – Sam Poole – Manchester

My parents really wanted the best for me and really pushed me to excel at school. I had good grades but averaged a ‘B’ grade in English. Maths was ok English was a little poor so we looked at home tutoring. My parents wanted me to get straight ‘A’s’ in maths and English not ‘B’s’. They also didn’t want to take any chances either. Home tutoring was brilliant for me, the tutoring was flexible and the tutor was knowledgeable in their subjects too. I am much better at English and maths now I really understand things better in both subjects Tutoring really filled the gap for me. – Beth Young – Manchester

I was a slow learner at school. School was perhaps my least favourite place to be. It was all because I really didn’t understand certain subjects. Maths was always difficult for me but Science was also a stumbling block. I really didn’t want to do any of these at school and I just drifted through the lessons until thankfully they were over.

I can say that home tutoring has proved the tipping point for me. Having the home tutor was a little hard at first but the tutor was skilled not only in teaching but in getting me to believe in myself and get the most out of the lessons. After a full 16 hours tutoring course it became apparent that my attitude to maths and science has changed dramatically. I love maths, science is better but still not my favourite. Tutoring has helped so much. – Dan Collingson – Manchester

I want to be a lawyer when I grow up. For that I really need to go to college and to university. To get that university place I need good grades and to get good grades I need to study really hard and pass my exams. That’s the problem! I want to have a high earning job but my skills are not going to get me the exam results I need to pass and get into university.

It was mentioned to me by a friend that home tutoring could be the way to go. She had  home tutoring, being tutored 2 days a week in maths. Her school work had improved a great deal. So why not thought I’ll get a home tutor. My parents weren’t sure at first about the cost of home tutoring.   But I was quite mature and managed to argue that having home tutoring was in fact an investment in my future and it would pay itself back many times over. I even went as far as to say if you get me home tutoring then I will pay back the tutoring fees when I land my top job.

They succumbed and a home tutor was arranged. My tutor has helped me so much. She’s a great tutor and a friend too. My maths has improved and I really can’t wait for the tutor to arrive.  We are even good buddies on facebook. Home tutoring for me was very valuable, the cost is no real cost when you set it off again the benefits tutoring gives you. – Dawn Nelson - Manchester

Case Study P2

Consultations are provided free of charge and it’s an amazing service, you actually have a trained Education Consultant come to your home and assess your needs and the needs of your child to find the most suitable home tutor. The most important part of the process is communication and finding a real solution so we get the tutoring package spot on.

Home Tutoring Progress

After 20 minutes of chatting about the tutoring process we decided to perform some home tutor derived assessments with James. These are well constructed assessments written by our tutoring staff and they cover Maths, English, Non verbal and verbal reasoning. Within these subjects we test a number of key areas to ascertain problem areas or gaps in knowledge. All this help our home tutors work more efficiently with the student. The tutoring assessments were concluded and further questions and background research gave us the ability to make a recommendation for a home tutoring package. James was not in desperate need of a home tutor; James really needed somebody to work closely with him to ensure he maintains focus. This could be achieved with a specialist home tutor for children of his age once a week in Maths and English.

The Home Tutor

It’s always beneficial to have a home tutor that has a real passion for helping students learn Home tutoring requires high level of skills to get the best out of tutoring.  James’s home tutor is called Anu.  Anu has been a tutor with us for a very long time now. Our home tutor explains to us how she feels James is progressing with his tutoring. “James demonstrates an excellent creativeness in writing stories say his tutor Anu. From what I have seen we need to do some more tutoring on the use of grammar in his English writing including appropriate use of nouns, verbs and the different tenses and conjunctions.  When I tutored maths we covered subtraction, addition and multiplication sums.  James demonstrates a really good ability in adding and subtracting numbers, though some tutoring sessions still needs to be done on multiplication and sums” James know his home tutor is a real benefit for him.

At Tutor Doctor we don’t just provide a home tutor for your needs and then remove our interest in their progress. “That’s not the Tutor Doctor Way” explains Christine, Education Consultant and Company Director. “All our families receive our full attention throughout the period of their home tuition programme. We always keep very much in touch with families and our tutors. We need to make sure the service and home tutor we said we can provide are actually delivering the right tutoring package where it’s needed. . We constantly monitor our home tutor’s effectiveness in the field too. We have to be confident our home tutors fully understand the needs of the family and can really deliver a first class tutoring service.” So with all this attention to detail and the highly skilled staff and home tutors at Tutor Doctor it’s no wonder the tutoring service they provide is highly regarded by their customers both past and present.

A few weeks on and James is flying with his tutoring. His understanding and confidence has really grown with the skill of his tutor. He is doing great work and Tina is so relieved and highly confident that with further help from the tutor and extra home tutoring that James will go into his next term with an increased knowledge and confidence. The home tutor is delighted with James’s progress and he really is a fantastic advocate of the modern tutoring system provided by Tutor Doctor.

Case Study P1

Tina Needed A Home Tutor For James

Tina came to us for help with her son James. James is by no means behind or really struggling with his school work. On the contrary James is an excellent student who really does work hard and gets results Maths is his favourite subject. The problem for Tina lay in the fact James was now going to be going into year 3 and she knew this new teacher was very strict with his class and James may not respond to his teaching style. Tina lives in Manchester and takes up the story.

“I was extremely worried about his continued progress” exclaimed Tina, “I would describe my son as a dreamer and prone to shut off when he’s not getting any direct attention” Tina had every right to feel like this, after all who knows their child best? Tina continued “I really feel that what James needs is home tutoring to help him focus on his work and give him some sound maths understanding before changing year. I really feel a tutor would help James. If we can ensure James knows his maths through home tutoring then we can take some of the negative focus off him” Tina had heard about our home tutoring services through a mutual friend who was already being tutored with us. She was quick to call us to see if we could help find James a good home tutor. Tina is a very independent business woman with her own successful salon in Manchester to manage. “I just don’t have the time to tutor him myself my Manchester salon keeps me very busy; it loathes me to say that because I would really love to tutor him. I am also not confident in tutoring as it’s been a long time since I went to school so I’m not sure that my tutoring methods would help or hinder him.”

This is a comment we hear time and time again. People just don’t have the time to slot home tutoring into their busy lives. As Education Consultants we are also able to advise that sometimes it is very difficult to home tutor your own children, you are just too emotionally involved, naturally. We met Tina at her home to see if we could help with her tutoring needs. We were introduced to a lovely polite young man called James. He was very bright and alert, his creativity shone through almost immediately. He was busy playing with his Lego and telling us all about the building work going on at the kitchen table. We took our time to get to know him a little and Tina also. Tina told us her concerns about his new year and hoped home tutoring was for him. We listened and made notes as she talked.

Consultation Process, Find The Right Tutor

As Education Consultants we are highly trained to assess children to find the right home tutor, not only with the physical tests but also their character and their attitude to learning and schooling. James was really enjoying school too which is a huge bonus, home tutoring would really work here we thought. If a student wants to learn maths and English really well having home tutoring is even more effective. Home tutoring is a 2 way relationship built out of trust, understanding and communication between the tutor and the student.

Tutors Comments

I have been a home tutor for about 5 years now. I work mainly across Manchester but I will travel a lot further afield to reach needy students.  I love tutoring it’s a great way of teaching that has little pressure and engages the children’s minds in a positive manner. Of all the home tutoring classes I participate in I do have my favourite subjects. I love maths and English, in fact maths and English are the top subjects that home tutors provide help for. I would say I do around 80% of my tutoring in these too subjects the rest (I can also teach History) is spread over science and SATS too.

I am a busy tutor and I work most evenings and at the weekends too. I am a qualified teacher but I gave up working in the school system for various reasons. So I have a regular day job but I do my tutoring in the evenings. I love what I do, I really wish there were more hours in the day so I could tutor more children.

I think for me the greatest thrill of tutoring is seeing the Eureka moment, that subtle hint from the child’s face when they just get it. I love that, I think to myself I did that! That student will now go on and develop their learning skills and improve across a whole range of subjects. It’s very true even though I tutor maths and English these two fundamental subjects cross over into many other subjects. Take for example Science, physics in particular this subject requires a great understanding of maths. So it’s far to say that improving maths you also improve physics. It’s a win-win. And for home tutoring it make tutoring other subjects much easier too. For instance one of my students has me for maths tutoring and another tutor for science tutoring. My work with him doing maths really helps the other tutor doing the science.

I think it’s a great vocation to be a home tutor and one that I would recommend to anybody with the skills to teach. It’s relatively easy to get into and there are many tutoring agencies who can help you and provide materials and training to get you started as a home tutor. O on give it a try I say, you never know where it may take you. – Angela Bowman – Home Tutor for Tutor Doctor Cheshire

I have been with Tutor Doctor in Manchester for 6 months now. During that time I feel I have made a huge difference to my students through the home based lessons and tutoring they have been exposed too. I guess that sounds conceited but I’m very proud of the fact that I can really change a student’s understanding of a school subject and help them advance. I get a great sense of pride through my tutoring work, I really do enjoy it immensely.

I came to become a tutor after going to a local job fair in Altrincham where we met Tutor Doctor, I had no formal training in how to be a tutor but i had just finished my degree in mathematics at university. Tutor Doctor helped me understand that a home tutor is not there to replace a teacher. It’s not there to work against the school but to complement the lessons they already have. I have never really thought about home tutoring like this before and I always thought it was for perhaps children who were a little slow. Sorry if that sounds harsh!

So starting our as a home tutor was a little nerve wracking for me at first but with guidance from Tutor Doctor and some time on the job actually tutoring  have become more skilled at my tutoring and I have become a better teacher too. Tutoring is so rewarding, I simply love helping the children learn. It’s the children that make this work so enjoyable. You get some little monkeys too but they bring a little more fun to a great job as well as giving me the chance to practice assertiveness. I think in all honesty most children really enjoy home tutoring, I have not had many children really hate it when the tutor comes round. I think thy like the direct attention that the tutor gives them, after all children love attention and tutoring is a perfect vehicle for them to get it as well as the added benefit of learning at the same time. – Andrea Parkinson - Manchester

Client Thoughts P2

There is a distinct advantage to having a home tutor come to the house and teach my daughter. The progress she has made because it’s on a one-to-one basis is quite remarkable. Lucy had always had problems understanding her maths, fractions and percentages were a major concern and her algebra was also lacking.

The home tutoring has made a significant difference in her understanding much more valuable than she even realizes I think. The school teachers just don’t have the time to sit with her and go through the areas of maths where she is really struggling. Home tutoring has been the saviour for us. If you are thinking about tutoring then I can’t recommend it enough. – June Avary – Manchester

We have just had our first set of lessons with our tutor come to and end. We had 20 hours of private tutoring help over the last 4 months and it had been great. My son has picked up a lot of extra skill in his ability to comprehend his English, his spellings have improved dramatically and his Grammar is so much better too.

Jack used to always hate English but the tutor has actually made him enjoy doing his English, even his homework gets done on time and correctly too. The teachers have noticed a big improvement in class and they tell me he has shot up to the top 10% in the class off 31 pupils. That’s a great result! Home tutoring is easy for him to do not taxing on his time so much, he actually looks forward to the tutor arriving so his can start his study. I secretly think he want to impress the tutor, but so what, whatever is his motivation to improve his English skills I’m not really bothered. Our home tutor is skilled at working with him and she can really get him to understand his school work and he really does understand it better too. I think we will continue to have home tutoring even though he has progressed so much we really want to keep the momentum up. – Joseph Crook – Manchester

Home tutoring is brilliant! It’s as simple as that. We have had numerous home tutors for our twins and they have been instrumental in making a huge difference in all the subjects taught. To date we have had home tutoring for two years on and off, and they have been tutored in maths, English, Sciences, Geography and even history. It really does work! Pat – Lythgoe - Manchester

These days having a home tutor to provide extra lessons is not as embarrassing as it used to be. When I was at school we had one child in class who had a home tutor. The tutor would provide extra lessons not at home but at school. Funny though why he was still regarded as a home tutor. Anyway for us we always had home tutoring down for children with work that was really behind and cruelly we thought they were slow to learn. I feel ashamed now to think like that but as children seeing a student having extra tutoring just to keep up was an easy target and a chance to gloat.

These days I think home tutoring is a method of getting the children ahead of the class, not the slower ones having to catch up. Of course tutoring for those children will always help but I know of some parents who have home tutors for their children just to turn a B into an A. This type of home tutoring is now more common place than the old type of home tutoring. I do feel it’s not about being behind as much, but more about making a positive difference to a student’s schooling. – Paul Rutherford - Manchester

Client Thoughts

I never really considered home tutors as a way of getting my son through his 11+ exam until we picked up a tutoring flyer at a country fare. You see I always thought that the school would take up the slack and of course spot any areas in subjects where my son was behind.

Since using a home tutor we have seen an incredible change in my sons understanding of core subjects. Maths and English has always been problematic for my son, I was really hoping he was just a bit lazy in the classroom and he would pick up sooner or later. I think if we hadn’t used a tutor then I’m sure he would have struggled with his GCSE’s in a few years time. – Ben Applethone – Manchester

Our private tutor has been a god send to my son, what with his learning difficulties and that. He has always found that grasping the basics of maths and especially English very difficult. We tried to home teach him but this got frustrating and time consuming because we really didn’t understand how to tutor him effectively.

It was then that a close friend of mine told us about their home tutor and the progress she had made in her school work. On further probing it sounded like a home tutor would be a great benefit to my son and perhaps it could return him to a position where his maths and English were a lot stronger.

Of course have learning difficulties made his studies a little harder and Aspergers made my son a recluse at school, he wouldn’t interact with his class mates and his constant repetitive behaviour made the other school children a little nervous. The school were very good at protecting him but they couldn’t spend all the time they needed to make him progress so much in his studies. He has a moderate form of the condition and the home tutor we found was well equipped to deal with this and had extensive experience teaching school children with this condition. Home tutoring has made a huge difference to him, of course he will never be cured but at least with home tutoring we can add to his school progress. – Margaret Williams – Manchester

We have used home tutors for all our children, yes there’s a cost to it but we have been keen to make sure our children are given every opportunity to progress in life. I have plans for my children to go through college and university studying maths, English and sciences to follow in our footsteps as general practitioners.

I feel the children need extra help even though we already pay a high for their terms at private school. I feel as a parent I have to expose them to as much learning as possible to give them the optimal chance of becoming successful. It is a very competitive world out there and university places are a gamble to say the least. At present we give our children both 2-4 private home tutoring each week. I have to say that it really compliments their school work and I feel it has helped them both get much better in all the subjects. - Dr Raj Patel – Manchester

Home tutoring Subjects

As you can imagine home tutoring can cover vast amounts of subjects and we are not just talking about English, maths, science, physics either. Home tutoring can be sourced for many subjects and this has included (from our students requests). Politics tutoring, computer tutoring, economics  tutoring, bookkeeping tutoring, Microsoft tutoring, driving theory test tutoring, obscure languages tutoring, internet marketing tutoring. In fact this list really does go on for some time. So as this proves there really is no end to the value of home tutors and what lessons they can teach.

In real terms the most popular subjects for tutoring are still the most obvious, these include maths tutoring, English tutoring, Science tutoring, GCSE tutoring and 11+ tutoring (at certain times of the year) This is by no means a definitive list of subjects available to tutor and we have had some amazing requests that can still surprise us at Tutor Doctor.

So what does a a typical home tutor teaching maths look like then. Well as you can imagine all students whether they are primary school and university students will be covering different aspect of maths. So once you tutor has understood the subject matter it’s then a matter of working out where the student currently stands with their understanding of maths and where the student wants their maths tutoring to take them too. The tutor will need to set a good baseline measurement, this could involve initial assessments of the students abilities and understanding of maths. Once the baseline is established and good discussion with the student to go over the findings of the maths assessments if necessary.

Moving on and putting a plan in place is the next step in advancing this particular maths student. The tutor will need to find an end goal for the student. Does the student have a maths GCSE exam, of the Maths A-Level or even a SATS assessment looking? Well whatever the maths requirement of the future the tutor will need to plan the steps to get the student to the desired grade, result. This could be achieved taking small steps of maths understanding and fully absorbing the subject matter before moving on to the next maths problem. Look at it like the little base camps surrounding Everest. You can’t get to the top in one go, you first must work from base station to base station and acclimatise yourself as you go. This is a great analogy for our maths tutoring progress. Little steps, learning and absorbing what the tutor is working on and fully understanding the subject is the correct way to approach successful home tutoring studies.

Once again there are many variables that would either help or hinder a home tutor in making a student more knowledgeable with there maths sessions over all. But the fundamental tutoring method should apply, you cannot rush the learning process and what is ideally sought is a stage where the student just clicks with maths and becomes better at learning not just better at the subject matter itself. We call this learning to learn and it’s a fundamental step that most students go through. One the tutor has got their student  to this level this new found learning skill goes with them across many other subjects too, not just maths. This is a really important point to make here, it’s a method of teaching the teaches the student how to get better at study. It’s a eureka moment for the student, give extreme confidence and is highly conducive to retained knowledge. Home tutors are skilled and adept in delivering expert lessons at home and this is the idea situation for the student, tutor and family. Want to master maths successfully? Then get out of the class room (after lessons of course) and hire a maths tutor. You will be amazed just how effective it really is.

Why Tutoring?

Home tutoring is a great way of ensuring the the student has a means outside of the school system to gain valuable information or additional study time. Teachers throughout the school system have always had a finite resource for extra educational help for students, that being time. Home tutoring fills the gaps by using skilled educational professionals (and some mentor tutors) to ensure that the student is getting the extra boost to their studies. Home tutors are varied and have a range of skills and areas of expertise. This expertise spans many school subjects and will include. Maths tutors, English tutors, Science tutors, Biology tutors, History tutors, Chemistry tutors, Geography tutors to name a few. Whatever the subject needed you can be sure that there will be a home tutor who can provide extra focused home base tutoring lessons.

Home tutors as the name suggests work within your family unit at your home. Most home tutors work in the evenings when the working day is over and the family have settled for the evening. You can of course get home tutors who will visit during the day time, this is more frequent during school holidays and weekends. But most home tutors provide lessons in the early evening. Studies have shown that even a little extra support with a tutor or a mentor can improve the students understanding of the subject matter many times over. The reason behind the thinking is the fact that the home tutors are focused directly on the student for the duration of the lesson. This is not like the classroom where a teacher may have to spread their time across a classroom of up 40 students.

The benefits of one to one home tutoring therefore stand out as a great method of delivering a quality educational experience to the student. Let’s not forget that the tutoring is done at the students home too. This is a comfortable place where the student will naturally feel relaxed and confident knowing they have no peer pressure to worry about.

There is no doubt that home tutoring is effective, studies have been extensive and the home tutor market continues to grow at an exponential rate. This large rise in demand for tutoring services is a key indicator that home tutoring is highly effective. We too have built our business on tutoring and we have direct correlating data produced by the hundreds of families we home school each year that confirms home tutoring works. Students may only need a small amount of home tutoring to make all the difference to the knowledge base. And of course every student needs a different approach to tutoring and learning.

Home tutors are adept at finding the real needs of the student and where the child maybe missing some key information. Skilled home tutors will quickly hone in of the missing knowledge gaps and identify the correct curriculum and focus to turn the student around. Tutoring at any level is beneficial as mentioned but just how much home tutoring does a student need? This is an open ended question and it depends on many factors, this could include the fact that students learn at different rates no matter how skilled the home tutor, it can also be that the student is not too keen on the subject fir example maths, and prefers English over maths any day. In this situation learning can take a little more time as the student really isn’t bothered to learn their maths. But a good home tutor will know how to motivate the student to become a fan of maths (e.g) and this is the key to home tutoring, and the skill of the home tutor too. To make a student understand their maths and make maths easier means that the student begins to enjoy maths. Maths becomes fun and maths becomes easier too. Of course exception home tutors are not always needed, and tutoring comes in many forms too.

Mentoring is an area we have seen becoming more popular. Rather than masses of focused tutoring the student has a mentor. Usually mentors are of a similar age and can offer support through experience.
